U.S. Debt: The Reason Why You Can't Get Ahead
by Marvin Byrd - LPC, December 2019
Ever wonder why no matter how hard you work it feels impossible to get ahead? People will tell you, it is all up to you, that it’s because of your spending habits, and lack of hard work and sacrifice. This, of course, is true, but the environment that we live in today is fundamentally different than it was in the 70's. It is exponentially more difficult.

People in the 70’s could expect to purchase a home in California for 2-3 times their annual income. Not only that, but they were often still raising a nuclear family with two kids on that same one income.
Like my father, they were doing it on jobs that didn’t require an education, such as working in a grocery store. That reality is gone and here is what happened.

In November of 1980, there was just less than $1 trillion in US national debt. The M2 money supply, which is generally regarded as the total amount of US dollars in circulation, was about 1.6 trillion. This can be seen on usdebtclock.org. After severing all ties to an actual commodity, gold, we realized we could borrow as much as we wanted. We did so through 30-year bonds. This meant the people at that time were able to enjoy the fallout of the wealth immediately, while the taxpayer 30 years in the future would carry the debt

The Libertarian Party of California Backs the Newsom Recall
by Elizabeth Stump - LPC, December 2019
On September 15, 2020, the Executive Committee of the Libertarian Party of California (LPC) voted to back the effort led by Erin Cruz to recall California Governor Gavin Newsom.  Erin Cruz, founder and CEO of Restoring America Now, Inc. and RAN Action Fund, Inc., started this grassroots effort to recall the governor for gross mismanagement in August and the petition to recall was approved by the California Secretary of State on September 6, 2019 for circulation.

The LPC issued a press release On October 21st and within just a couple days the story was picked up by news media both in California and nationally.  One America News Network (OAN) featured the LPC’s baking of the recall effort on October 23rd which included information on how others could get involved. To watch the full report, click here.

Libertarians believe that elected officials need to be held accountable for their actions as well as their inactions. Mimi Robson, Chair of the LPC said, “It’s been proven that Gavin Newsom lied to the voters during his campaign. We believe this is completely unacceptable and therefore have gone full force in helping to collect the 1.5 million valid signatures required by the deadline, which is February 13, 2020.”

The LPC explains in their press release that Gavin Newsom is not representing the needs and values of the people in the state and has breached existing laws and provisions of the California Constitution. He has signed new laws limiting individual rights and has broken promises made to the voters of California during his campaign.  Newsom has signed bills violating personal healthcare decisions and privacy, in addition to using overreaching executive powers to divert road repair funds, infringing on Second Amendment rights and limiting Pacific Gas and Electric’s liability regarding the recent wildfires. If you want to sign the petition or get involved in the recall effort you can get more information as well as locations for petition signings at the RAN Action Fund website, or contact your local county LPC organization to get petition signings going in your community.

Zoning is the Problem
by Michael H. Wilson, September 2019
The increased costs, monetary and otherwise, associated with zoning restrictions fall most heavily on the lowest end of the income spectrum.

On February 14, 2008, a Seattle Times article showed that almost 45 percent of the price of a home was to cover the costs of "land-use regulations." To be clear, those are zoning regulations. On a $447,800 home, $200,000 of that price was for regulations.

For most people graduating from school, getting a job with a livable wage, developing a relationship, and perhaps starting a family are big steps in life. However, the government has its hang in your pocket all the way, as many young, first-time homebuyers are finding out.

Housing Costs

According to a US Department of Labor study, in 1901 families in the United States spent 23.3 percent of their income on housing. By 1934-1936, families were spending 32 percent of their income on housing. Today housing consumes over 30 percent of our income for most of us, and those in the lowest 20 percent of the income bracket are paying almost 40 perfect of their income for housing. Costs decline from there, with the wealthiest quintile paying 29.9 percent of their income for housing.
